Meet the High Street Advisory Board
The advisory board includes 250+ high street businesses as well as 50+ other experts and stakeholders from across the industry.
REVIVAL RETRO
Rowena Howie
Revival Retro is an award winning independent boutique in central London.Their designs are classy, elegant and sophisticated. Inspired by beautiful bygone eras but made new. Revival Retro appeals to women who have tired of mainstream trends and throwaway fashion. They value the service Revival Retro provides and its high quality investment pieces that flatter women’s bodies. Having a bricks and mortar shop sets Revival Retro apart and customers will travel far and wide to visit the Boutique. The in store experience regularly receives 5 star reviews but Revival Retro also maintains a professional website, always innovating to exceed customers expectations.
I’m keen to be involved in the Retailer Advisory Board “by the retailer, for the retailer” to help us recognise the current opportunities available to us and develop a better understanding of what they might mean for business.
DULWICH TRADER
Dan Rigby
Our three award winning lifestyle stores, the Dulwich Trader, Tomlinsons and Ed are all located within the Dulwich area of London. Rigby & Mac is the online sibling of these three family run stores. Each store has a different style and products but the key values remain the same in store and online – excellent and personal service and a unique, eclectic edit of beautiful homeware, fashion and gifts.
“These are challenging times for independent retailers. I am a firm believer that the high street is a stronger place if we work together. It is heartening and promising to see that these conversations are taking place and that groups, organisations and individuals are collaborating to secure a future for independent boutiques both on line and on the high street.”
STARDUST YEARS VINTAGE FASHION
Karen Fitzsimmons
There’s no doubt that our love of Cinema and Fashion has played a huge part in the creation of Stardust Years, a Ladies’ Vintage Fashion shop specialising in original clothing, accessories, shoes, jewellery and gifts from the 1890s to the 1990s. We source our items from the UK, France, Italy and the U.S. and try to select very good quality pieces from a range of well-known designers and brands.
“So many of my customers say they come to Winchester because they like small independent shops like ours, with character, where you can find unique treasures. Shopping shouldn’t feel like a chore, but an adventure and the High Street will only survive with the diversity and character that Independents can bring to that shopping experience. But we’re an endangered species, and it’s not easy on your own, so it’s great to have a resource like SaveTheHighStreet where we can share our experiences and ideas – and look at ways to ensure the future of the High Street, together.”
CENTRAL VISION OPTICIANS
Bhavin Shah
At Central Vision Opticians, we are committed to providing our patients and customers with the tools and advice to achieve the best possible vision for life, especially in the current technology centred lifestyles. We are an independent optometrist practice that specialises in cataracts, glaucoma, good looking spectacles that give high quality vision, digital technology use and improving children’s vision and their ability to learn.
“The huge disruption of the retail environment by the internet means that high street retailers will need to develop a digital strategy using the advantage of their physical presence combined with new technology to provide a unique and personal experience for their customers in order to compete.”
ARTY GLOBE BY HARTWIG BRAUN
Isaac Lilos
Arty Globe launched at Greenwich Market in 2008, starting life in the form of a weekend market stall. In April 2009 the business expanded to a retail unit in the same location. Hartwig Braun is a fine artist specialising in design-led illustrative works. Using his architectural background to create expansive, detailed and engaging cityscapes utilisng a mixture of organic materials and digital methods.
“With challenging high street conditions and shifts in consumer buying patterns – independent businesses need to effectively collaborate and adopt the latest technology to ensure survival, allow growth and competition with bigger businesses. I believe that SaveTheHighStreet could play a leading role in building the framework for collaboration enabling, promoting, supporting and empowering small businesses everywhere to achieve success.”
40 COLORI
Cassandre Rank
Created in 2014 by siblings Giulia and Gabriele, 40 Colori is our way of bringing Italy’s artisanal tradition and ethical fashion together to create colourful accessories for the modern gentlemen. We handcraft the majority of our products in our own sustainable workshop which has been a part of our family since grandma started it in her basement some 50 years ago. We are committed to craft each one of our accessories according to the highest quality standards, using top materials and those artisanal techniques that have allowed Italian craftsmanship to excel over the years.
“40 Colori supports SavetheHightStreet.org because they are working for something that affects loads of small family businesses like us. In a world that is saturated with fast fashion and unethical brands, customers depend on small business to provide them with unique products that are ethical, sustainable, and trust worthy. If small business get run out then customers will be left in the dark when it comes to their shopping and that’s not fair to anyone. Thank you SaveTheHighStreet.org for working to keep small businesses around and growing.”
MACMAN
Jon
We’ve been providing jargon-free, honest Mac Support for over ten years. Come and speak to the Mac experts.
A great deal has changed over the last ten years at MacMan. Our commitment to providing independent Mac repairs, support, training and sales remain the same. We know that most of our customers aren’t Mac experts, so when you visit our Brighton or Tunbridge Wells stores, you can count on us to give jargon-free advice and clear answers. So far, standing by our core values has served us very well and we’re excited to see where the next ten years take us!
Speak to the Mac experts. You’re in good hands.
“Why do you support SaveTheHighStreet.org? Because the high street is thriving in both Tunbridge Wells and Brighton, you just need to know what customers want and they will pay for it
What high street do you want? One with a variety of services, retail and F&B
Your thoughts on the future of independent retail? People are prepared to pay more for excellent service and even more so if you’re local and independent. Find your niche by finding the customers that are not too price sensitive and then offer the services which they are prepared to pay for. And don’t bother trying to compete with online prices.”
ORGANIC WINE CLUB
Alexander Thomson-McLean & Dimitri Safonov
We all try to eat healthy, but do we know what’s in our wines? Grapes accumulate a lot of pesticides that are used to increase yields, protect from diseases and as a preservative. As a result, conventional wines are full of harmful substances. Many people, including well-known chefs and nutritionists, are switching to organic wines. These are better wines as they do not contain residual pesticides. Discover your organic wine health benefits on our blog or in our guide.
Our wine expert tries over 3000 wines and handpicks 150 delicious bottles of organic wine. Use our personalised service to get the best organic wine for your healthier lifestyle.
‘SaveTheHighStreet.org is a great source of knowledge and understanding as its advisory board members are made up people who fully understand the highlights and pressures we feel as local retailers. It makes it easier to want to be part of this organisation.
I would love to see my High Street as a bustling community of business who are able to collaborate to provide the best possible services for the local communities at their hearts. With the ever encroaching online services impacting every part of society, shopping local with independent retailers is really the best way to provide top notch customer service with the most interesting and sometimes interactive way to ensure customer satisfaction.’
LAGOM
Irena Lane

The location in Gabriel’s Wharf on the upper Thames reflects the relaxed yet classic and elegant aesthetic of the brand. Irena comes to the retail world of London with a strong design background and wants to #SaveTheHighStreet because “”…people love walking into a store and having that personal connection and service aspect of shopping, looking at and touching products in a real way. Virtual is good, real is better”””
“…people love walking into a store and having that personal connection and service aspect of shopping, looking at and touching products in a real way. Virtual is good, real is better”

“There is a thinning of independent stores, we want to support areas to have more than just chains and carbon copies. We believe in the retailers getting out there and doing their thing, rather than being forced into corporate chains. Independent shops not only offer variety, but a customer focused service that’s nice for us and our shoppers.”

ABBOTTS DIY
Chris Abbott
Abbott’s is a truly family firm, with four family members working together every day in the shop, to offer our customers a
truly personal service. We offer a good old fashioned service, in a modern style store, giving you the best of both worlds.
We listen to our customers, so we constantly strive to improve our ranges and service. But don’t just take our word for it, as Abbott’s were awarded ‘UK Hardware Retailer Of The Year’ in 2011 & 2016, for their Product Range, Customer Service and Low Prices.
So come and visit us and see what Abbott’s can do for you!
“Abbotts is a family business, started in 1979 by my late father and grandfather. Today it is ran by myself, my brother Jeff and my mum Vivienne. We have two shops in Ottery St. Mary and Seaton in East Devon, which stock extensive ranges of DIY, Hardware, Cookware, and Housewares. We are extremely competitive on price, and you will find most of our prices below, what you would expect to pay in the big DIY superstores. We have been nationally recognised within the DIY industry, and won the award of DIY retailer of the year in 2011 & 2016, something we are extremely proud of.
I believe that independent businesses are the life blood of our high streets, wouldn’t it be awful if every high street up and down the country looked the same? Independents, give variety, individuality, and a personal service that you simply can not get with a national, or global chain. Independents employ more people per £ spent than the nationals, combined independents, pay millions in tax, which sadly the same can not be said for the like of Starbucks, and Amazon. Squeezing out smaller businesses, and paying very little tax is wrong on every level!
‘Britain is a nation of shop keepers’ but maybe not for much longer…. The high street as we know it is under threat. The bigger retailers, both on-line and bricks and mortar are getting stronger, and more powerful, and the smaller ones are simply being squeezed out. The high street, needs help! This is why initiatives like SaveTheHighStreet.org is so important. They can help, our voices to be heard, because together we are stronger, and one hell of a force to be reckoned with.”

MILLE FLEURS HATS
Jane Cave
We were started in 1997 by Jane Cave who had worked and trained with world renowned milliner Graham Smith at his atelier in central London. The discipline and inspiration she drew through working in a couture workroom gave the perfect foundation to start her own business. Jane found the ideal setting in the beautiful village of Otford, Kent, with a shop that also incorporates the workshop on-site.
Jane and her team make each bespoke hat by hand, using traditional millinery techniques to create a flawless finish. Our attention to detail, whether it’s a large picture hat or a tiny fascinator, means that each headpiece is hand~blocked and stitched, and made specifically to each client’s specifications.
The aim at Mille Fleurs is to make the perfect headpiece to suit each client, taking into account personality, outfit choice and venue. Having a hat created and made especially for you, ensures you not only look good but feel fabulous.
We are based in the Kent village of Otford, near Sevenoaks, close to the M25 with free parking and a direct train link to London Victoria.

We look forward to seeing you in one of our shops soon.
TRACEY NEULS
Jane Howard
In a market saturated by sameness, Tracey Neuls footwear offers a very individual viewpoint – always unique, intriguing and yet still contemporary and commercial. This design ideology stretches from shoe to shop.
The honesty of the design process is key to the individual look. Shunning fashion fads and trends, inspiration can and is taken from literally everywhere. Stationary details such as envelope ties have been translated into shoe fasteners whilst a random burnt log inspired a whole collection of scorched heels. Her toe shapes are sculpted from plasticine; the smell reminding her of innocent days spent sculpting as a child.
Likewise, when you enter a Tracey Neuls shop, you can leave your preconceived impressions of shopping behind. Shoes are hung from the ceiling rather than on shelves. The movement of swaying shoes relate to how they naturally move on your feet. Tracey explains “The shoes should be seen at 360 degrees, not just from the top – sometimes the best view is from the back!”
Mary Portas, Queen of Shops, said that Tracey Neuls in Marylebone Lane was one of her favorite shops in London, “This shop is like walking straight into the artist’s imagination”.

WALTER PURKIS & SONS LTD
Walter Perkis
The Purkis Family have been involved in supplying food to families in and around London for nearly two centuries. Members of the family have been Greengrocers, Butchers and Fishmongers over the years. Walter Purkis came into the Fish trade on leaving school over forty-five years ago, when he found employment as a trainee fish salesman in the Old Billingsgate Market.
The present business was founded in 1973 by Walter when he bought his first shop at the Baker’s Arms, Leyton in East London. Within a few years he added a second shop in Hoe Street, Walthamstow and then a third shop in Wood Street, Walthamstow. The business continued to expand and in 1983 Walter purchased from the Green Family, his fourth shop at Crouch End, North London. This was followed by the purchase of the fifth shop on Muswell Hill Broadway in 1987. As the patterns of trade altered in different areas it became necessary to dispose of the Leyton and Walthamstow Shops, leaving the Crouch End and Muswell Hill shops as the core business.
As well as running a successful business Walter Purkis has also been involved with the National Federation of Fishmongers and was a National Council member for some years as well as Vice-Chairman of The London Fish and Poultry Retailers Association. He is at present a committee member of the Billingsgate Seafood Training School Training Advisory Committee.
The two shops are now run by Walter in Muswell Hill and eldest son John at the Crouch End Shop. Together with Walter’s wife Pamela who moves between shops helping where ever needed. Although Walter and Pamela’s other three children have different careers you will often see them helping Dad and Mum when holiday times come around.

Here at the CMJ we want to champion, support and celebrate individuality and independence on the high street offered by innovators and people with passion, which makes our high streets an interesting and appealing place to shop.”
THE JOG SHOP
Sam Lambourne
The Jog Shop was established in 1986 by Sam Lambourne, a prolific local marathon runner with a hundred marathons behind him and a best of 2-18.
The idea was to provide a specialist running service for local runners, giving a choice of all the latest running shoes on the market in full and half sizes. Because of this it has been recognised by all of the major running brands as a gold medal dealer.
This latest move to online sales is prompted by the current trend to buy online. Especially if you know what you need and what size, then it offers a hassle free way to purchase, saving time, travel and parking etc. and delivered right to your door.
PEARL’S (PET CARE)
Pearl Hamilton
We are a family owned and run pet shop in the North East of Scotland. Established in 1982 by Pearl Hamilton, the business has grown, and moved with the times ever since.
We specialise in everything you need for domestic pets. We do not, and never have, sold livestock. Partly because Pearl has always felt that the display housing available to the pet trade is not a fair or adequate housing for pets, partly because she feels that all pets should be able to go from their mothers, to the new home, without being poked at and stood on display in shops, and last, but not least, by the time she’d have given people the third degree, as to whether they were fit and proper people to purchase an animal – they’d have been saying ‘never mind missus, we’ll go elsewhere’ anyway!
This ethos has taken us to where we are today. That combined with the simple fact that we NEVER advise for the sake of our till, but ALWAYS for the benefit of the animal in question, means that we have generations of customers coming to us for ALL their pets needs and desires!
We have moved premises, changed the services we offer, and generally bent, and shaped the business to fit in with our customers needs, at any given time. At the moment, we, as a small, independent, family business, are aware that many of our customers are working increasingly long hours, to support the lifestyle they have chosen for themselves and their families. With this in mind we offer alot of services to make shopping for the pets as easy and hassle free as possible.
Customers in the local area benefit from free local deliveries, 24 hour ordering service, and a range of payment methods, including Paypal. Customers from further afield, many of whom used to live nearby, but have had to relocate, for various reasons, can also benefit from 24 hour ordering, and easy payment. THIS includes our on line customers!
We fully understand that in this day and age people still WANT to shop in independent shops, and still wish to benefit from the service, experience and knowledge that you can often only get from and independent family concern, BUT, in reality, it is getting harder and harder to do so. We understand this, because WE are people just like you, and we are all customers of somebody – something that many businesses seem to forget! Not us!
Following our first dalliance into web pages, way back in the 1990s, we initially used ebay as our ecommerce platform, but as our online sales have grown (becoming Powersellers on ebay), we have found a definite need for our very own, up to date web site. We’ve refused to join in th complaining and moaning that is so often the tune of smaller businesses. WE shop online, so why shouldn’t our customers?! The internet is NOT something to be scared of, or to see as the end for high street retailers, it is just another TOOL for us to embrace.
Over the years we have introduced everything we can to help our customers enjoy shopping with us. As far back as 1997 we were welcoming email orders from existing clients.
We are a tiny shop, but we have HUGE business ethics. The main one is – give people what they want. It isn’t much to ask, and it isn’t hard to offer!
In line with our instore customers, we strive to offer excellent service and advice to all of our online customers. We pride ourselves in being able to offer hard to source items. Ones that you maybe saw 20 or 30 years ago, and can’t find now. Or ones you’ve seen in bigger stores, but at a horrendous price. Or, more often than not – things you have NEVER seen before – we have all sorts. PLEASE do drop us a line, and we will do our best to list any of your ‘hard to find items’.
After being in the pet trade this long, there isn’t much we don’t stock. But, unless we know there is a demand, we might never think to list your dream item on here! So, go ahead, ask. You don’t have to buy, but it costs nothing to challenge us to list it!
THOMAS SMITH’S TRUG SHOP
Robin Tuppen
Way back in the heydays of the 1820’s, just before Queen Victoria ascended to the English Throne, a Man of Sussex, one Thomas Smith of Herstmonceux, made a decision about his life that was to have a profound effect on Sussex and the World. CREIGHTON’S CHOCOLATERIE
Lucy Elliott
Mother and Daughter team, Lucy Elliott and Andrea Huntington, began on a journey in 2010 with just the learned knowledge of an Italian confectioner, a marble slab and a handful of moustache-shaped chocolate molds. Named after Great Granny Creighton, we opened our chocolaterie in the small town of Leighton Buzzard in Spring 2011. The aim was to create a design-led chocolate brand whilst keeping the exclusivity of a hand-made, artisan product. Oh, and to not forget the important details like eye-catching packaging and a sense of style! The original moustache lollies flew off the shelves and we became best known for our exciting chocolate bars and much-coveted edible gifts.
Fast forward a few years, Creighton’s Chocolaterie are now stocked in Liberty London, Fenwick, Brown Thomas and a plenty of high-end independent confectioners and gift stores around the world. In August 2012 (and again in 2014) we were awarded a gold star by the Guild Of Fine Food’s Great Taste awards.
At Creighton’s Chocolaterie, we make all of our products in small batches, by hand, with the best Belgian chocolate and quality ingredients. Our collections change seasonally, much like a fashion brand, with limited edition flavours and designs appearing amongst our year-round range. Our small team design, make and pack everything in-house to ensure that it always meets our high standards. We approach everything with a light-hearted, British sense of humour so you can always be sure that you will find something to make you smile & your tastebuds tingle in our chocolaterie.
“Your high street is changing for the better, becoming more exciting, diverse and unique to your town. We are thrilled to be part of this change and support the work of Save The High Street to help independent retailers make it happen.“

BALFES BIKES
Richard Balfe
Pedalled along by a team of cycling enthusiasts, Balfe’s Bikes not only keep a wide range of interesting paraphenalia (suggestions always welcome) but also employ great mechanics to keep your bicycle working in tip-top condition.
Each of our three shops has it’s own feel.
East Dulwich was our first shop. Richard opened at 50 East Dulwich Road in 2008. After a few years we outgrew that shop and moved seven doors along to number 36. After a long refit we opened with almost three times the space we originally had. We have been here ever since. The shop and the business have seen a few changes since then. For a short period of time we were called BC Bikes (Balfe-Coleman.) These days we operate a large workshop in the basement of 36 and are proud to have worked on thousands of bikes. In Dulwich we are very proud to have been selling Trek’s since 2008. Nowadays we are also Brompton, Whyte and Genesis dealers. Our mechanics here are true professionals and embrace the new technology as bicycles increasingly utilise hydraulic and electronic componentry. If you are reading this after November 2014 we shall have just undergone our second revamp, with the aim to bring our customers the best servicing and retail experience we can deliver.
Kennington opened up in 2011. This shop is about repairs. In fact we are so much about repairs the primary focus of this shop is our Workshop. Here we also stock sensibly chosen and fairly priced accessories which we change with the seasons. Our Kennington workshop is on Kennington Road, SE11 which is a very busy cyclists commuter route. In good weather we get over 2000 cyclists passing on their way to work in the morning. Just off Cycle Route 7 (CS7) our Kennington Workshop is able to handle any repair and is staffed uniquely by experienced and qualified bicycle mechanics.
Streatham is our latest effort, opened in 2012 with a lovely large (and now dry) basement we aim to be building our own frames and repairing others from here in the next few years. You will come to know Streatham for the large clock above our door, helping you commuters realise how late for work you are! In September 2014 we re-vamped our shop floor, putting into practice some of the lessons we learnt over the first two years of trading in this shop. We now have, even if we do say it ourselves, a beautiful well stocked shop. We are proud to be Genesis and Trek dealers from this location.

BUBBLES & LIGHT
Mike
Boutique Accessories
We love all things British, handmade and distinctive; goods that have been carefully and responsibly created in the UK. So opening a shop in which we sold only the finest soaps and candles this country has to offer was a natural way to channel our energies.
Constantly scouring the country, we look for artisan soap and candle makers who have the same passion and love of all things natural as do we.
We think that our growing collection is representative of some of those committed cottage industries who offer a fantastically individual, different and superior product.
We stock some of the finest artisan British soaps and candles, handcrafted using only ethically sourced, fair trade, sustainable ingredients.
Our nasties-free collection of bubbles and light will surely suit your every mood and style; natural vegan soaps, goat’s milk soaps, liquorice soaps, cherry and almond soaps; hand-poured, pollutant-free eco soya massage candles, smelly candles, not so smelly candles.
We even stock soaps for eczema, psoriasis, colds and man-flu! And we’re adding to our collection all the time.
We have a special area for you to try our soaps before you commit. Pop in and indulge yourself in one of life’s little luxuries.
